Successful Power BI Rollout in a Multi-Tenant Organization

A large dashboard with hundreds of users or a daily report for a small team? Power BI helps organizations to modernize their reporting by providing a low-code environment in which a business user can structure and visualize the organizational data (citizen development). In this presentation, we will talk about the strategic approach that enables large organizations to scale the provision of Power BI Service while maintaining control of their data. Together, we will walk through the challenges of the roll-out, exploring the flexibility of Power BI and solutions it can provide in hand with Azure capabilities.

Presented by Miriam Obetkova, Senior Consultant @ Machine Learning Reply

Modern Data Processing and Analytics on Azure Databricks – Best Practices

Azure Databricks emerges as a powerful platform for modern data processing and analytics, providing scalable and collaborative capabilities to unlock the potential of big data. We will delve into the world of Azure Databricks, exploring its key features and highlighting how it enables organisations to tackle complex data challenges. The discussion of the core concepts will be supported by small demos for easier understanding, and the presentation of a full end-to-end machine learning solution on Azure Databricks will close the show.

Presented by Döme Lörinczy, Consultant @ Machine Learning Reply

The talks will be in English. Registration is mandatory (see link below).

Data Community Austria December Meetup Special

Itzik Ben-Gan is coming to town and joins us for a Data Community meetup in December. Get your free tickets in time, we are meeting in-person in Vienna this time!

Beware of Nondeterministic T-SQL code

Nondeterministic calculations are calculations that, when invoked repeatedly, return different results given the same inputs. Most T-SQL developers understand what nondeterministic calculations are, but many aren’t aware of the possible implications of using nondeterministic code. This session will show you the many surprising aspects of using nondeterministic code and will provide best practices that will help you avoid getting into trouble.

Presented by Itzik Ben-Gan, Data Platform MVP, Co-Founder & T-SQL Trainer @ Lucient

Data Community Austria November Meetup

  • This Is Fine – Firefighting for the DBA
  • Infusing AI with Power BI

This Is Fine – Firefighting for the DBA

Whether you’ve been a DBA for a week, a year, or a decade, you’ve likely had that day where it felt like you were fighting multiple fires at the same time. That often makes you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing – but you do. I’ve been both an on-call DBA and a consultant in my career so I’ve seen how to handle firestorms like this correctly – and how to set fire to everything by handling them wrong. Join me for an hour where I share some technical tips, some horror stories, and some success stories. Hopefully you will walk away with some tips to improve your incident response while improving your sanity during the storm as well!

presented by Matt Gordon, MVP, Director of Data and Infrastructure @

Infusing AI with Power BI

presented by Martin Pöckl, Cloud Solution Architect Data & AI @ Microsoft

Data Community Austria Meeting Oktober

For our upcoming community meeting on October 19th, we have prepared two exciting „deep dive“ sessions with great speakers:

  • Defeat Page Latches in Microsoft SQL Server
  • Lessons learned from optimizing enterprise data models in Power BI

Defeat Page Latches in Microsoft SQL Server

Concurrent inserts into a clustered table with an ever-increasing key become a bottleneck since Microsoft SQL Server must protect the corresponding pages with a page latch. There are several techniques like, hash partitioning, reserve bits, in-memory OLTP and the feature introduced in 2019 CTP 3.1 called OPTIMIZE_FOR_SEQUENTIAL_KEY. We will compare these features to understand their performance improvements and the effort required to modify your existing application.

presented by Torsten Strauss (MVP, MCSE, MCT), Senior Platform Engineer @ BP Europe

Lessons learned from optimizing enterprise data models

You know that DirectQuery performance sucks – but, what should you do when DirectQuery is the ONLY available option?

You know that high cardinality increases data model size – but, what should you do when your users want to analyze numbers on a granularity level higher than day? How to reduce the data model size, while at the same time satisfying business requirements?

You know that by leveraging composite models, you can gain significant performance improvements – but why do you still have DirectQuery queries even when you target the data from the aggregated table in Import mode?

In this session, I’ll share tips, tricks and workarounds learned and implemented in real-life scenarios on enterprise data models.

As you may assume, this session is not for rookies – I’ll assume that you already have at least intermediate Power BI/Tabular model knowledge.

Data Community Austria Meeting September

  • Azure Data Factory ♡ Bicep
  • Building your lakehouse on Synapse

Azure Data Factory ♡ Bicep

Azure Data Factory Bicep Azure Data Factory (ADF) is a mighty tool when it comes to creating data loading workflows and orchestrations. However, creating ADF loading logic takes a lot of clicking and even though it is thoroughly integrated with Git, the code representation of ADF resources is hardly ever used. Bicep is a mighty tool when it comes to creating Azure Resources from Code and its capabilities go beyond just creating infrastructure resources. What if both came together and we were able to create ADF Linked Services, Datasets and Pipelines from a Bicep template? It would be a match made in heaven. But why wait for dreams to come true?

In this session we will introduce you to the basic concepts of ADF and Bicep and then show you how you can create ADF from Code by writing Bicep files and deploy them to your Azure subscription with one click.

presented by Benjamin Kettner, MVP and CTO @ ML!PA Consulting & Alpa Buddhabhatti, MCT and Consultant @ Cluster Reply UK

Building your lakehouse on Synapse

No, not that kind of lakehouse… The data lakehouse architecture launched launched by Databricks a few years ago has become a viable solution for modern data platforms, increasingly so with the string of new features released from Databricks lately. But the data lakehouse concept can also be fully implemented using Azure Synapse.

So join me in this session to understand what the data lakehouse is, and how to make one using Databricks and Synapse!

presented by Johan Ludvig Brattås, MVP, Principal solution architect @ Capgemini

Data Community Austria Meeting November

  • SQL Server on Kubernetes (Ben Weissman)
  • Power Automate und Power BI (Ynte Jan Kuindersma)

SQL Server on Kubernetes

You may have heard of Kubernetes – in my opinion the future platform for any kind of modern data platform deployment. But maybe you also heard how complicated it is and that you have to be a Linux Pro to use it?

Well, how about me showing you, how to deploy SQL Server 2019 to a new Kubernetes cluster running in Azure (Azure Kubernetes Services) and all you need is a Windows Workstation and an Azure Subscription.

presented by Ben Weissman

(Power) Automate Power BI

presented by Ynte Jan Kuindersma, Director @ BIRD Automation

Data Community Austria Meeting Oktober

In unserem nächstes Data Community Austria Meeting am Mittwoch, den 20. Oktober 2021 ab 16:30 Uhr führt uns Microsoft MVP Dejan Sarka in die Tiefen von Advanced Analytics ein:

  • Association Rules Step by Step – Market basket analysis with T-SQL, R, Python, Azure ML and SSAS

Association Rules Step by Step

You will learn how to recognize good products, products which raise the sales of other products, and toxic products, products which are usually sold alone or are the last product in the basket, thus finishing the shopping. Measures like support, confidence and lift, are explained in details. Sequential basket analysis is covered as well. Demos are developed step by step in T-SQL, in order to show how the calculations are made. Then you will see demos also in other languages and on other platforms.

presented by Dejan Sarka, MCT and Data Platform MVP, Independent Consultant @Dejan Sarka s.p.
