SQL Server Parallel Datawarehouse Update #3 (AU3)

leave a comment »

Cost based optimizer

  • Better query performance via improved DSQL Plan generation
  • Full alignment of security system and metadata

Introduces a fully cost-based MPP optimizer.

DMS (Data Movement Services)

Dramatic improvement in query speed and appliance throughput

Removes data type conversions from Data Movement Server

½ rack Appliances from Dell and HP

Lower price and entry level capacity for MPP data warehousing

  • Dell ½ racks available now
  • HP to ship ½ racks by April

System Center Integration (SCOM pack)

  • Lower cost of PDW monitoring and administration
  • Seamless management of PDW and standard SQL Server instances

Fully integrates PDW to Systems Center Operations Manager

Stored Procedures (subset)

  • Greater application compatibility
  • Closer affinity to SQL Server dramatically reduces system conversion effort and time
  • Provides modular programming, standardization and re-usability
  • Introduces the Stored Procedure object to PDW
  • Enriches programmability for PDW by putting process control closer to data objects

TDS/MSFT (Native SQL Server drivers

  • Enhanced PDW support for other SQL Server Applications
  • Common connectivity stack as SQL Server SMP

Tabular Data Stream – Native protocol for communicating with SQL Server.

More expressive query language

Ability to write and encapsulate query sophistication using ‘built-in’ T-SQL

Addition of more expressive functions to PDW T-SQL

Integration to SAS

Full integration to key 3rd party BI and ETL tools to leverage existing solutions and BI platform investments

Extends PDW integration to third-party tools to SAS

Full support for International Data

Extends PDW collation sequence beyond Latin Bin 2
